M-Audio Studiophile AV 30 | Chuck F
You may have read our article in high praise of M-Audio’s Studiophile AV 40 powered speaker system. Surely if you’re in the market for something that looks like a studio monitor and quacks like a studio monitor but for less than half the typical studio monitor price, the AV 40s should be a worthy contender. A few concerns surfaced in our review, namely the AV 40s are generally priced at about $150 per set. The other big issue is the size of the speakers, as they are relatively heavy and bulky. If either of those issues stopped you from making the investment in the AV 40s, you may want to consider his little brother. Introducing the M-Audio Studiophile AV 30 desktop speaker system.
The smart, useful little brother
The AV 30s are a more compact version of the fantastically lauded AV 40 speaker system. With fewer features and a bit less punch, the price of the AV 30s is set pretty firmly in the double digits. Each speaker weighs in at 11.5 pounds. While a bit more of a space saver (6.3 x 5.3 x 7.9 inches) than the AV 40s, the AV 30s are still larger than your average desktop speakers and provide more power.
The AV 30s utilize the same technology as the other AV speaker systems, but the quality of the amplifier in the AV 30s more closely resembles that of desktop speakers, though still packed with much more sound and a fuller audio experience. Like the AV 40s, the AV 30s are encased in matte-finished vinyl–coated, medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and sports a plastic face and black metal grill that protects its 3-inch woofer and 3/4-inch tweeter.
The volume capability of the AV 30s is noticeably lower than the AV 40s. These were designed more for the budget consumer who may just want a good speaker system in the house. The AV 30s offer and extended low end, great for hip hop and dance music, and the wooden cabinet construction of the speakers lends itself to a pretty solid-sounding bass. The highs are crisp and the speakers themselves can be applauded for their clarity.
With the M-Audio Studiophile AV 30, you are getting a great price for that M-Audio quality for sure.
